Intriguing, emotional and inspiring are the three words that I would use to describe the book Tears of the Silenced by Misty Griffin.
The book Tears of the Silenced is a nonfiction accounting of abuse within the commonly revered Amish community does not start in the Amish Community. Rather the protagonist begins her life in an area geographically far from an Amish community and in a household that was "English"; the Amish terminology for non-Amish people. I was intrigued as I read, wondering how she became Amish. My eyes welled with tears as this young girl lived through abuse and fear from not only her biological 'English' family but also her Amish community. I cheered as the author shared about her quest to free herself from her abusers and the community that endeavored to silence her. That is where I began to feel inspired by this story. Once free, the author inspired me even more as she took the steps to heal and live a healthy and productive life As she healed emotionally, she knew that she had to do something to right the wrongs happening in that community. Inspiringly, she uses her story and experiences to bring to light the hidden problems within the Amish community. She uses her platform to help others that re in a similar situation. Tears of the Silenced will open your eyes and heart to the plight of many. Kudos to the author for surviving and thriving after these experiences.
