Book Review: The Book Woman's Daughter by Kim Michele Richardson

The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek was by far one of my favorite reads of 2022 so I was super excited to see a second book in the series.  I readily picked up Book Woman's Daughter by Kim Michele Richardson and dove right in.

The Book Woman's Daughter is a fictional work that is continues the storyline of the blue skinned packhorse librarian from the first book in the series.   Once again, the book dove into not only the  historical aspects of life as a Kentucky Blue Skinned person but also  the programs designed to get literature into the hands of the Appalachian people.

The Book Woman's Daughter is the well written story of the daughter of the book woman who finds herself alone after her parents are placed in jail due to racial laws prohibiting white people to marry non white people. (Aka a blue skinned person).   Left alone with no means of support, she finds herself becoming a book woman, much like her mother.  This book doesn't focus as much on the plight of the blue-skinned people or the aspect of the packhorse library, but rather on a young girl left alone to fend for herself.   She faces challenges in a world that is more than willing to ostracize for simply for the hue of her skin while fighting battles due to being underage and alone.

This book shows that perseverance and determination are the key to not only surviving, but thriving. The book was well written and easy to read.  However, I felt that it lacked the spark of the first book in this series.  Other than the additional underage challenge, this seemed to be more a repetition of the first book.  If you only have time to read one book in this series, definitely stick to the first book, The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek.
