I was drawn to the book Doctor Ice PIck By Claire Prentice for a few different reasons. The thought of a lobotomy completed with an ice pick is morbidly fascinating.
The book Doctor Ice PIck By Claire Prentice, is a look at the main doctor that developed and pursued a career in the field of neuroscience and in particular lobotomy. This doctor claimed to have perfected the art of lobotomy, which was in early days completed with an ice pick that he actually found in his kitchen. He performed lobotomies with great flair for audiences, often with little regard for the patients. His preoperative care was non-existent and his post operative follow up was focused more on getting a picture than any actual scientific study. Yet this doctor pushed his 'perfected' procedure as the cure all for any number of mental ailments.
I had previously read other books about survivors of this barbaric procedure, so the concept was not new to me. However, I found myself appalled anew at the practice that was completed on so many people. It is sobering to realize that doctors have so much power and can wield it so freely on a fragile community that couldn't speak for themselves.
